Postcard offers that get calls, with examples by trade

Prices and rules checked October 2026.

Postcard offers that get calls are specific, worth something real, easy to use, and end on a set date. “First mow free when you book by March 15” beats “Quality lawn care at great prices” every time. Give one clear offer, put the deadline and the phone number in large type, and add a code so you can count every response.

What makes a postcard offer work

  • Specific. A set price or a named free item. People can picture it.
  • Worth something. The value should be easy to see in two seconds at the mailbox.
  • A deadline. An end date turns “someday” into “this week”. Give at least 30 days, since EDDM delivery takes 3 to 10 business days.
  • Easy to use. One phone number, one QR code, no forms to print.
  • Trackable. A code, a tracked number, or a QR page, so you know it worked.

Seven kinds of offers

  1. Set intro price: “New patient visit, one price.” Removes the fear of a surprise bill.
  2. Free add-on: “Free gutter flush with any roof repair.” Feels generous without cutting your main price.
  3. First one free: “First mow free with a season contract.” Works when the customer stays for months.
  4. Neighbor credit: “You and your neighbor both save when they sign up.” Builds route density.
  5. Deadline bonus: “Book by the 15th for priority scheduling.” Fills the calendar early.
  6. Free check or estimate: “Free roof check” or “Free home value check.” Low risk, starts a conversation.
  7. Guarantee: “On time, or the visit is free.” Takes away the risk of trying someone new.

Before you print an offer, check any rules for your trade. Dental boards, alcohol laws, lending rules, and campaign rules all limit what a card can say.

Grand opening postcards

A grand opening is the easiest offer to write, because the news is the hook. Send two cards:

  • Card one lands the week before you open. “Opening March 7 on Main Street. First 100 guests get a free dessert.”
  • Card two lands in the first month, to the same routes. “Now open. Here is your welcome offer, good through the 30th.”

Show the address with a small map, the hours, and a photo of the place or the product.

Offer mistakes that cost calls

  • No offer at all. “Family owned since 1998” is nice, but it gives no reason to call this week.
  • Too many offers. Three coupons on one card means none of them stands out.
  • A weak discount. 10 percent off an unknown price is hard to value. A set price is clearer.
  • No end date. The card goes on the fridge and stays there.
  • Small phone number. Put it big on the front and the back.

Do the break-even math first

Work out how many customers the card needs to pay for itself. Example: 2,500 homes at $0.47 a home is $1,175 with printing and postage. If one new customer brings you $250 in profit over the first year, you need 5 customers to break even. Everything after that is profit.

Then make the offer generous enough to get those first few calls. A free first visit that wins a customer for a year is cheap.

Track every response

Put a code on the offer and ask for it when people call. Better, use a tracked phone number and a QR code that goes to a page made for the mailing. Our Growth plan adds both. After 30 days, compare the calls and jobs to the cost of the mailing, and keep the offers that worked.

Put your best offer in every mailbox nearby.
